This is something which caught my attention when Richa's laptop speakers stopped working. When she contacted HP personnel, they said that speakers got damaged because of VLC player. When I searched over the net for the same problem, it was found that this problem had arisen with many people. Many HP customers , it is allged according to a forum post have complained of faulty internal speakers. HP blames VLC for this fault. Richa was told that her laptop speakers were not covered under warranty and as such she will have to pay for the damaged speakers to be repaired or replaced. On the other hand, Dell representatives willingly replaced laptop speakers (as reported in the same forum), but issued an advisory against using VLC when external speakers are not plugged in.
My personal opinion is that nothing is wrong with VLC. I live in a management hostel, and almost all of the 500-550 residents have a laptop and I havent heard of any such problems (by the way most of the laptops are Sony Vaio or of Dell, my is of Toshiba). While it might not be known what actually the problem is, one thing is for certain that HP's customer service is worse than that of Dell's.
